Chipping Cottage

Chipping English Cottage
Chipping Cottage

he Village of Chipping in Lancashire was the inspiration for the name of our "Chipping Cottage".  The word chipping means "market" in Old English and this village was most likely developed around a market.  It was famous for its wool trade sustained by the sheep which grazed on the rolling, green hills of Lancashire.  Picturesque, ancient water-wheels on Chipping Brook add to the charm of the area.

Our cottage evokes the charm of the many small, stone cottages and little gardens along such streets as Talbot Street and Windy Street while enjoying a surprisingly functional, open interior suited for today's lifestyles.

Typical English detailing of exposed rafter tails, shed dormers, leaded windows, steep gables, shake or slate roof and rough stone construction come together to make a lovely home that could easily be from the English countryside. This charming cottage packs a lot into a relatively small space.

Just inside, off the foyer, a large great room with fireplace and vaulted ceiling offers surprising space with a view through a covered terrace beyond.  A room with vaulted ceiling off the great room may serve as a space for dining or a small office.  The large hearth room with fireplace and kitchen open to the great room creating a space perfect for entertaining and comfortable year- round living.  The laundry and large pantry are just off the kitchen.  All are accessed through off a small covered porch to one side. The stairs shown are for access to a basement.

Two large bedrooms are located at one end off a common vestibule with powder room.  A vaulted ceiling makes the master bedroom very special.  Double glass doors open directly from the master to the covered terrace.  Large windows provide lots of light and great views.  The master bath sports double sinks with abundant counter space, a whirlpool tub, large shower, private toilet, and large walk-in closet.

This cottage has just about everything!

Our revised Chipping Cottage with walk-out basement makes our original plan just right for a sloping lot when you want room for those extra features that grow the house without it changing the cottage appearance that makes this house so captivating.

Very little has changed on the main floor. We have added a terrace or deck and moved the master bedroom fireplace to the outside to warm those autumn days when you want to be outside and enjoy the view. The master has a 13' tray ceiling with high, arched windows for great light and views. The vaulted great room is open and airy with the fireplace as a focal point. A wall has been added to create a sense of separation between the kitchen and the great room.

The terrace level adds so much space! Our plan reserves unfinished space for whatever you would like to use it for saving dollars in construction costs until you want to finish it. Still there is room for plenty of storage, a bedroom and bath, hobby room, and exercise room. All with easy access to the outside and a covered terrace!

Who would ever guess  that this little cottage was so functional and livable?
